Olga Krykun’s emotional and personal work combines various artistic techniques, from objects to videos to painting. Although painting has dominated her work in recent years, it is often part of more complex multimedia installations.
Pastel colors and soft lines are the hallmark of her compositions, which gently dissolve into the canvas, creating a subtle, intimate atmosphere. Krykun exposes the viewer to strong emotions such as sadness and melancholy but also hope and joy. She draws on seemingly naive folk or pop-culture motifs and forms which, however, in the spirit of the post-digital era, permeate the reality of social media and its algorithms. The emotions we may experience while consuming content on TikTok are mirrored in the faces of the entire cycle E-Girl Melancholy. The artist’s work is also strongly connected with her Ukrainian roots. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, her characters turned into sunflowers—symbols of Ukraine—which she labels forget-me-nots, a kind of memento of the mayhem of war.
