A characteristic feature of Valentýna Janů’s work is an essayistic narrative style, which she uses to address the topics of feminism, emancipation, technology, and other prominent global social issues. The artist works primarily with video but supplements it with photographs and spatial objects, often textiles.
Her installations are characterized by a distinctive pastel palette reminiscent of the postmodern design of the 1970s and 1980s. In her videos she often works with the performing arts, choreography, music, and pop culture in general, incorporating the formats of TV entertainment, be it music videos or the weather forecast. The invisible yet fundamental medium of her practice is text, which constitutes the starting point for her works, forms the scripts and voiceovers for videos, becomes part of objects, or remains completely hidden in the background. By moving between genres and media, Janů creates complex commentaries on critical issues of the contemporary world. She studied photography at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and then continued at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in Intermedia Studio 2 headed by Dušan Zahoranský and Pavla Sceranková.
