Vasil Artamonov’s work is closely tied to the development of the means of expression of twentieth-century historical movements. In his work we can trace the genesis of the forms of the heroic period of the Russian avant-garde, constructivism, suprematism, cubo-futurism, as well as the realistic art of the postwar years and conceptual tendencies.
He reinterprets these established trends through painterly means, breathing new life into them with contemporary themes. The ethos of the avant-garde revolt corresponds with the artist’s definition of himself in relation to contemporary artistic trends, the political canon, and a social reality based on the commodification of man both by capitalist relations in general and by the social networks and online environments that have been proliferating over the last decade. Through his work, the artist points out that utopian dreams of the future are not a thing of the past and that their contemporaneity lies in the possibility of rediscovering visions of dignified futures for humanity. For many years Artamonov was part of an artistic duo with Alexey Klyuykov, with whom he won the 2010 Jindřich Chalupecký Award. He studied in the Studio of Painting at the Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design in Prague, where he also graduated from the Studio of Intermedia Confrontation.
