The work of sculptor Tomáš Roubal critically responds to current social issues and political events, often thematizing the reduction of humans to a petty commercial commodity.

The artist’s work is a kind of new existentialism, biting but also humorous, with a lightness that sets it apart from the art-historical direction of the ’40s and ’50s. Roubal’s work is characterized by a simple and visually comprehensible, almost cartoonish style. He works primarily with metal, and his steel works are usually created using a time-consuming method of layering welding wire. These are processual works in which the seemingly endless process of creation itself critically responds to the commodification of time.
